How Coachella Is Becoming The Most Sustainable Festival Ever

The first weekend, of the music festival Coachella, begins tomorrow. Boasting headliners such as Radiohead, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar hundreds of thousands are sure to attend the 3-day, 2-weekend extravaganza. Also a showcase for the visual arts, Coachella has become the premier model for music festivals around the world. However, it’s not just the entertainment that makes Coachella a leader in its industry. It has created several initiatives towards being an eco-friendly venture. Their initiatives are fun and give rewards for participation.

The first approach is called “Carpoolchella.” It not only lowers carbon gas emissions but it also gives concert-goers the chance to win some great prizes. In order to participate, attendees must travel with 4 or more riders in one car. Then, place a piece of paper with the word “Carpoolchella” on it in a car window. After arriving to the festival, by Sunday at 2pm, a festival employee will randomly choose winners. Winners may receive backstage passes, VIP upgrade passes, merchandise passes and more.

One initiative that is sure to be a hit, throughout the weekends, is the “Recycling Store.” During the festival, attendees are asked to pick up any bottles, cans and cups they find and cash them in for points at the Recycling Store. People will then be able to turn in their points for some awesome merchandise, such as t-shirts, posters, ferris wheel tickets, and refillable bottles.

Their next idea is not only fun, but it also educates concert goers. “Polar Bear Dating” gives attendees the chance to go one a “date” with the Global Inheritance mascot, Ursus the Polar bear. The date will include a behind the scenes tour of the festival via golf cart, as well as receiving 2 guest backstage passes. In order to win, contestants will be selected at random. Three people will go head-to-head in a question competition. Contestants will be quizzed on life and climate change.

These are just some of the initiatives that Coachella will be utilizing throughout the weekend. They will also have Recyclosaurus Rex roaming the festival, a playground that creates energy, and use sustainable signage.
